Two clips demonstrate teacher response to disruption in learning activities. Both talking to a friend and a conflict are shown. Notice the difference in the amount of time taken from instruction in the two examples.

Strategies summary

-Ask student to do a self assessment of ability to handle a situation

-Remind student that their actions are the proof the teacher uses for decisions regarding positive and negative consequences

-Disruption may be an indication of a need to re-teach procedures

-Use of check marks allows immediate consequence

-Clarify role of teacher in conflicts

Student behavior

Talking to friend instead of being on task

One student distracts another and that student responds by escalating conflict

Questions to consider

1.     What feelings do you have in these situations?

2.     What was the teacher trying to accomplish? What behaviors indicate success or need for further strategies?

3.     What non-public responses might the teacher have used?

4.     How could the second situation be handled with less attention and time given to the disruption?

5.     What alternative strategies do you propose?
