Multiple Challenges: First Grade

Student exhibits physical behaviors that, while soothing at times, are distracting him from focus on learning. Student needs to work independently and is isolated from peers.

Strategies summary 

-Guide student to create effective workspace
-Sit student very close to teacher for consistent guidance in learning and model positive     relationship for other students to see
-Touch and physical proximity meet his physical orientation
-Ask questions to guide student progress on tasks
-Make visual connections for drawing project
-Praise for what has been accomplished

Student behavior

Difficulty with tasks, off task, sucking and chewing on clothes and other objects, disconnect from peers

Questions to consider 

1. What do you notice about the student behavior? What are you feeling?
2. What was the teacher trying to accomplish?
3. What might be happening that causes child to lose focus and disengage?
4. What alternative strategies might have worked with this child?
5. What, if any, cues exist that indicate your contact with home or student services staff?
