It’s Time! Teens Supporting Teens
Participants in the staff in-service have consistently requested use of the powerful youth stories to educate teens about depression related issues. The program is designed to be taught by high school students for middle and high school classes. The collaborative group of program developers included teens. The teens prioritized the objectives of the program to focus on building teens’ ability to recognize and support troubled friends. Teens can be trained to present the program in one or two class sessions. This program comes in an “urban” version.

Parent Support for Intervention- It’s Time! Parents Addressing Teen Depression
School staffs describe a lack of resources to address parental reluctance to seek professional diagnosis and possible treatment for their children’s mental health problems. The 20 minute DVD is given to parents by school mental health professionals to create a communication bridge to the parents. The DVD is a collection of stories of parents from the Milwaukee area who have faced challenges, sought assistance and experienced the benefits of effective mental health treatment. They champion the school as a trusted partner in addressing their child’s mental health concerns.
Academic Evaluation: Excerpts from Outcomes Summary: In-Service Program evaluation conducted by Carmen R. Valdez, Ph.D. and Stephanie L. Budge, M.A., U of WI-Madison
“The “It’s Time!” in-service is a valuable and well received program in schools. It is effective in increasing awareness and knowledge about skills to support the academic engagement of students with depression.”
Peer Program research conducted by Azara Santiago Rivera, Ph.D. and Sarah Gillis, M.A., U of WI-Milwaukee
“Assessment of the peer educators involved the administration of a pre and post measure, given during training for the “It’s Time!” program, regarding confidence around teen depression and related issues. There was a significant increase in confidence immediately following the intervention, as well as nine months later. Further, there was no decline from immediate post test to the follow-up nine months later and instead results showed a slight increase in confidence around teen depression.”
“The It’s Time program had a profound effect on my perception of depression and what it looks like in the school setting. It increased my ability to communicate with students, teachers, and parents. Our staff gained awareness and changed how they look at student struggles and challenges. Thank you for this opportunity to change.”
